Practical Ways To Deal With A Whining Dog

Introduction
We all have pets, especially dogs. We pour a lot of love and affection on them because, as they say, they are our best friends. They are very loyal and reciprocate the love we shower on them. But they do have their problems, just like human friends. Unfortunately, they are not able to say what their problems are so that we can address them.

Fortunately, we have professionals who have studied dog habits and have identified the causes of their aggression, chewing, irritation, digging, etc. They are now available to help you overcome that problem that you’ve been experiencing with your dog. For instance, let us take a close look at one of them: Whining
How to deal with a whining dog
Puppies
Whining starts with puppies, where it comes naturally. A young puppy will whine without even realizing it when she’s hungry, tired, or cold. The mother dog will respond to this whining with milk, warmth, and a safe place to sleep – and with time, the puppy begins to realize the intimacy between the two. This is when she begins to whine deliberately, to notify her mom that something’s wrong or that she needs something.

Puppies are usually adopted when they are between eight and ten weeks old. This is the time that a puppy will either learn that her new ‘mommy’ doesn’t respond to whining as her old mommy used to do. She may also learn how to use whining to get what she wants from her new mommy. This is why it’s generally advocated for you to leave your new puppy alone on her first night – if you respond to whining with positive attention (cooing, patting, sympathy, taking her out of the crate and cuddling her) how can she help but learn to whine until she gets what she wants? You’ll need to use your common sense and good judgment, of course.

For a panic-stricken pup, she probably does actually need some attention and affection, if only to distract her from the strangeness of her unfamiliar new surroundings. The trick is to respond in a timely manner so that she doesn’t feel like it’s her whining that’s got the result (or else you’re conditioning her to whine whenever she wants something).

For a puppy that’s working herself up into a real frenzy of crying and whining, don’t feel like you h
1000
ave to cold-bloodedly ignore her. By all means, pay her a bit of attention and calm her down – just initiate the contact when she’s no longer whining. It’s not always realistic to wait until she’s stopped whining altogether – contrary to popular opinion, some puppies simply do not stop whining and really will continue for hours on end. If you suspect that this may be the case, you don’t have to prolong your pup’s misery: just wait til she’s stopped for even a few seconds, then seize your moment and open the crate door. It’s not ideal, but under the circumstances, it’s likely the best you’ll be able to manage.

Adult dogs
Whining is not a natural form of communication between humans and dogs. Most dogs grow out of whining around the six-month age. If your dog is whining after this period, it means she’s either doing it unconsciously, or she’s learned that it’s a useful motivating tool to get her something that she wants or needs. As an adult dog, there are a variety of reasons as to why she might be whining: in pain, bored/lonely, needs to go outside, afraid/anxious, etc. Your response to her whining really depends on the cause of it.

Sometimes whining is justified, and does require a response – and sometimes, it’s just plain manipulative. Other times it may be justified, but the response that comes most naturally won’t necessarily help your dog. To clarify things, the more common reasons for whining – and suggested ways for you to react – are listed below:

When she’s whining out of pain: A dog that starts whining all of a sudden, and then keeps it up steadily afterwards, may be whining out of pain. This isn’t just limited to older dogs: puppies and young dogs can be subjected to some pretty severe growing pains, so don’t rule out this possibility on the basis of age. If you think your dog may be in pain, check her over to see whether there’s any merit to this belief.

First, check for the obvious signs: is she holding any paws off the ground, or favouring a limb/side of her body? Check her face and body for scratches and splinters. Next, you can palpate her limbs and joints for inflammation (like arthritis) and possible injuries. Remember to be very gentle: if she’s in pain, you don’t want to make it worse. Simply rub your hands along each leg, pausing at the joints to give each one a gentle squeeze. Run your hand down her tail to check for lumps and bumps, too. Even if you can’t find anything seriously amiss, if you think she’s whining out of pain, a trip to the vet is in short order.

When she’s whining out of boredom and/or loneliness: You’ll be able to tell if this is the cause because she’ll be wandering around the house (probably following you around, or pacing about the room you’re in), whining aimlessly and without direction (i.e. she’s whining to herself).

The best cure for a dog that’s whining out of boredom is a quick shot of exercise: take her out for a brisk walk as soon as you can, and on a more general level, try to ramp up her daily exercise quotient. A tired dog is almost never a bored dog. For a dog that’s whining from loneliness, you’ll have to try your best to spend more quality, interactive time with her. If you don’t have a lot of spare time to spend with your dog, then make the time that you do spend together really count: play, groom, train, cuddle.

When she’s whining out of fear/anxiety: Normally, it’ll be fairly easy to tell whether she’s whining out of fear or anxiety. When she’s afraid, it means there’s a direct cause to her fear – like a thunderstorm or a windy afternoon that’s rattling the windowpanes and spooking her a bit. If she’s anxious, it means there’s no direct, tangible cause for her edginess – she might be a bit on edge because you’re a bit stressed and she’s feeding off your energy, or perhaps there’s been a change to her daily routine (she didn’t get her normal morning walk, for instance).

Your response to this sort of whining should always be one of discouragement. D
1000
on’t attempt to punish or correct her for whining out of fear or anxiety – that will simply increase her stress, making her feel worse and making the whining worse, too. Instead, simply ignore her. It’s a bit hard to do at first – in fact, it can feel like the least natural reaction in the world! But it really is the best thing for you to do. If you lend unwonted credence to your dog’s mood with an excessive reaction – patting, sympathy, cooing – she won’t be comforted; she’ll actually be more worried, because you’ve just validated her fear. If it seems to her like you think she’s got a good reason to be worried/afraid – and if you react with comforting words and soothing pats, that’s how it’ll come across – then she’ll be more afraid. Not less.

So in this case, you need to ignore the whining outright. Don’t molly-coddle her; instead, distract her with play, or run through a quick obedience routine. Get her thinking about something else.

If she needs to go outside: If your dog’s whining because she needs to go outside, first of all you should give yourself – and her – a big pat on the back: it’s the sign of a genuinely well-trained dog. She needs to go badly enough to be whining about it, but she knows not to do it inside – and she’s smart enough to try and let you know that she needs to go out, too. This one’s easy: if she’s standing near the door, or just has That Expression (if you’ve had her for a while, you’ll grow to know That Expression – it’s different for every dog, but most owners are able to easily and correctly interpret it as meaning, “Let me out – now!”), you should let her out. It’s as easy as that.

1. Ensure the puppy is always kept in a sage place when alone. A kennel large enough to lie down in and stand up erect or an area cordoned of with baby gates. The most important part here is to ensure they are in an area that they won’t soil.

2. Never allow the puppy to wander the house, ensure that they are always under your supervision. This allows you to catch them in the act and you will be able to react in the moment by interrupting them as you scoop them up and take them outside.

3. Cue phrases are ideal and should be used in the right place and time, when interrupting the puppy say, “outside”, once you have taken the puppy out to the area you want the to eliminate use a phrase such as “Go now”, “washroom”, “potty”. Never use the outdoor phrase inside when you are trying to interrupt them, this will only confuse them.

4. Rewards and praises are given when they do the deed outside. Have treats on you and give lots of love when they do as requested.

5. Indoor accidents just confuse your puppy; therefore you must keep an eye on the 100% of the time. You may need to use a leash indoors for the first little while to keep them from wandering off.

6. If you come upon a little accident, this is YOUR fault not the puppies. Never punish for this.

7. When cleaning up puppy’s accidents ensure you use a good odour eliminator prior to the actual scrubbing. You must remove all scent traces of the mess, if you do not, you puppy will use the area again.

8. Proper diet with a good quality food along with ensuring you puppy is healthy and has no reason for abnormal elimination will go a long way to helping the process.

9. Feed and water your puppy on a schedule that will allow for time to go out before you crate them for extended periods of time.

10. Take the puppy outside about once an hour when you are home. By this I mean TAKE the puppy out, not put the puppy out, you must be there to give praise when the puppy goes as they are being taught.

11. Full bladder and bowel control don’t come until around the 16th week; due to this, do not have your puppy waiting in the crate for extended periods of time. If they have to hold it for to long they will go and this again will not be their fault.

12. Expand smaller dogs freedom in the house more slowly than that of larger dogs. Smaller dogs see the house a larger area that has many good areas to eliminate that are away from where they sleep, play or just hang out.

13. As much as dogs can hold it for 8 hours during the night does not mean that you should wait 8 hours between taking them out. When sleeping dogs systems slow down and allow them to hold it for the night, much the same happens when you leave them for 8 hours when you go to work as they most likely spend most of that time sleeping. When you are home you should be taking them out almost hourly.

Done correctly you can be very successful at potty training puppies; some may take longer than others. Providing proper supervision to minimize accidents and properly cleaning up any messes that do happen in the house will ensure a successful house broken pup.

Jenny asked:

Right now we have a miniature shnauzer who is aobut 2 years old. She is very energetic and always wears out her doggy buddys who comes over to play (she loves her and hates to leave her)(so we also feel it would be nice if she had another dog to live with). So we thought a puppy would be perfect to so both dogs could be constant companions and keep each other entertained. We were also wondering since our dog is already potty trained will it be easier to teach the puppy potty training? Thanks

Well she is doing really well with going potty on the pad, but she will not **** on it, she always goes into our hallway. I try to keep an eye on her after she eats, but she won’t go for awhile and it’s always when I leave the room for 2 seconds that she will go, and then I tell her it was bad and take her over to the pad. I need some more ideas, should I just start to take her outside all the time, or should I stick with pad training, and then move forward with going outside? Thanks!

If you want to learn how to potty train your puppy, then this article was written for you.

Just like a child you will need to take part in potty training puppy so that they begin to understand where they can and can not go to the bathroom. A puppy will not know that they can’t utilize your expensive rug for a bathroom break if you don’t teach them that it is bad and redirect them to the outdoors for a bathroom break.

Potty training can take quite a bit of time if you don’t dedicate the right amount of time at the beginning. You will right away want to start the potty training process the moment you bring your brand new puppy home. Start out with teaching them to utilize newspapers for indoor breaks and slowly change that to them going outside. Puppies tend to have to go to the bathroom a lot so having newspapers down helps prevent unwanted accidents everywhere in your home.

There are many different guidelines developed when it comes to the potty training process and in the end you will be getting your puppy to ask to go to the bathroom outside. It doesn’t matter how you get there as long as you get there. Some puppies may struggle with the concept so be patient and don’t expect things to happen over night. Potty training puppy is one of the more complicated training processes you’ll go through, but once you reach the final steps it will be worth every minute you spend getting there.
